The corpse reviver no. 2 is a pre-Prohibition era cocktail that deserves a perpetual encore. When you're bone-tired, a tad parched, or perhaps just feeling slightly dramatic, this classic cocktail is the perfect concoction for restoring you to your senses. Bright and lively, and very easy-drinking, this exceptionally delicious tipple offers a restorative combination of gin and layered citrus flavors with just a hint of absinthe for lovely herbal complexity. An excellent cocktail choice for any occasion, the corpse reviver no. 2 also sets a particularly perfect mood for the spooky season.

Squeeze the fresh lemon juice and pour it into a cocktail shaker.

Then pour in the Cocchi Americano or Lillet Blanc.

    Serve immediately.

Hint: This cocktail really needs no garnish. But if you're feeling a little theatrical, you might place a black pansy (or other edible flower that you find thrilling in appearance) delicately on top.

    Equipment

You will need a cocktail shaker for purposes of "reviving the corpse," so to speak!

    Variations

    • Gin - The Botanist is often my preference, but this cocktail is wonderful with any London dry gin. Choose your favorite.
    • Cocchi Americano - I tend to go for Cocchi Americano here, but Lillet is also an excellent choice. Alternatively, you can substitute Dolin Blanc.
    • Cointreau - I don't recommend using any other orange liqueur here...the Cointreau is de rigeuer for a cocktail like the corpse reviver no. 2, in my humble opinion.
