The Red Riding Hood (AKA Lingonberry Martini) is a wonderful cocktail for kicking off the autumn season, and it also makes a perfect addition to any winter holiday table. This rosy colored little libation takes its inspiration from the classic Swedish drink Vargtass, or literally translated, "wolf's paw" cocktail. Traditionally consisting simply of vodka and lingonberry juice shaken with ice, it's a drink that is not for the faint of heart. Delicious...and fierce. With the addition of a little sweetness to the mix here, courtesy of blanc vermouth, this variation is a martini style drink that delivers just a slightly less ferocious bite.

This cocktail makes an excellent aperitif when Swedish meatballs are on the menu.

    See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions for a Red Riding Hood (AKA Lingonberry Martini)

Clear liquid being tipped from a steel measuring jigger into a cocktail shaker next to a bottle of vodka.

Pour the vodka into a cocktail shaker.

Pale yellow liquid in a steel measuring jigger being held over a cocktail shaker next to a bottle of blanc vermouth.

    Then add the blanc vermouth.

Red liquid being tipped from a steel measuring jigger into a cocktail shaker next to a jar of dark red liquid.

    Finally, add the lingonberry juice.

Ice cubes being dropped into a cocktail shaker.

Toss in a generous amount of ice and shake vigorously.

Red liquid being strained from a cocktail shaker into a coupe glass.

Then strain into a martini or coupe glass.

Red Riding Hood (AKA Lingonberry Martini) served in a coupe glass and garnished with three berries.

Garnish with a few lingonberries or an orange twist, if desired.

Hint: If you would prefer your lingonberry martini a tad more tart or a bit more sweet, feel free to fiddle with the proportions of blanc vermouth and lingonberry juice. They can certainly be adjusted to taste.

    Equipment

You will need a cocktail shaker for this drink.

    Top tip

If you don't have access to lingonberry juice, cranberry juice is an easy (and typically more widely available) substitution. While the drink will not taste precisely the same, the flavor profile will be similar...and then you will have yourself a lovely cranberry martini, which is a cocktail equally fit for the autumn season and winter holiday table.
