    Instructions for an Irish Mule

Ice being tossed into a copper mug.

Toss a generous amount of ice into a copper mug.

Amber liquid being tipped from a steel measuring jigger into a copper mug next to a bottle of Irish Whiskey.

Next add the fresh lime juice.

Finally, top with the ginger beer. Then give the drink a good stir.

Garnish with a lime wedge (and fresh mint sprig, if desired), and serve.

Hint: When it comes to the specific proportions for this drink, you should feel free to adjust them to suit your individual taste. (You will notice that the measurements outlined in the recipe below are given in a general range, rather than set out precisely.) Let your palate be your guide! Do you prefer your drinks on the stiffer side? Perhaps add 2 ounces of whiskey instead of 1½. Do you get a rash when you have too much citrus? Might be a good idea to go easy on the fresh lime juice! Do your copper mugs happen to be gigantic? Maybe pour in around 6 ounces of ginger beer rather than 4. (You get the idea.)

    Selecting your ginger beer

Not to be confused with ginger ale, ginger beer is a fermented beverage made from ginger, sugar, and water. And it is much more intense than ginger ale, bringing a bold kick of heat wherever it goes! Give that it's really the primary component in any sort of mule cocktail, selecting a quality ginger beer is the main key. The brand you use will have an enormous impact on the ultimate quality of your drink...so choose wisely. (That said, I strongly recommend fever-tree.)

    Top tip

When it comes to mixing up an Irish Mule (or any sort of mule for that matter), using a copper mug is not just for show. While it does certainly make for a beautiful presentation, a copper mug is also fundamental to the best sensory experience with this drink. Copper keeps your mule colder and fresher for much longer because it's an excellent conductor. And when your Irish Mule stays delightfully frosty, this prevents the ice from melting too quickly and unpleasantly diluting the drink. So if you don't already have a copper mug (or a set of them) hanging around your kitchen, let this cocktail be your inspiration to remedy that situation!
