Fondly known as the "Papa Doble" when it was first concocted for the famous writer at the bar El Floridita in Havana, this drink started out very heavy on the rum and bone dry. But the Hemingway Daiquiri eventually evolved into a more well balanced, and widely beloved, classic cocktail. A pitcher of these makes a perfect refreshment on a hot summer afternoon...fruity, smooth, and notoriously easy to drink. Though if you kick them back at Hemingway's pace, you might one day find yourself dancing a languid rumba somewhere subtropical with the trade winds rippling through your hair and wondering just how you got there in the first place. Don't say I didn't warn you.

Hemingway daiquiri served in a coupe glass with a lime wheel.

This cocktail pairs especially well with Cuban Mojo Chicken.

    Ingredients for the Hemingway Daiquiri

    Ingredients for Hemingway daiquiri.
    • white rum
    • fresh lime juice
    • fresh grapefruit juice
    • maraschino liqueur
    • ice
    • lime wheel (optional for garnish)

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

Clear liquid being poured from a steel measuring jigger into a cocktail shaker next to a bottle of white rum.

    First add the rum.

Clear liquid being poured from a steel measuring jigger into a cocktail shaker next to a bottle of maraschino liqueur.

    Then add the maraschino liqueur.

Two halves of lime, a thin slice of lime, and two halves of grapefruit sitting on a cutting board.

Next slice the lime and grapefruit horizontally in half and juice them.

Pale pink liquid being poured from a steel measuring jigger into a cocktail shaker next to the remainder of a lime and a grapefruit half.

Add the lime and grapefruit juices.

Large ice cubes being dropped into a cocktail shaker sitting next to a white ice cube tray with a light blue lid.

Toss a generous amount of ice into the shaker.

Pale cloudy liquid being poured from a steel cocktail shaker into a coupe glass.

Then shake well and strain into a coupe glass.

Garnish with lime and serve immediately.

Hint: Many modern recipes for the Hemingway Daiquiri call for the addition of simple syrup, but I'm with Hemingway on this one...the drink is better if you skip the sugar. The maraschino liqueur adds enough sweetness to balance the tartness of the citrus, particularly given the increase from Hemingway's original measure of merely 6 drops to now somewhere between a quarter and a half an ounce (depending on which specific contemporary recipe you consult). That said, if you prefer your drink slightly sweeter, I recommend simply adding an extra splash of maraschino liqueur.
