Circe's sucker punch (AKA Mediterranean punch) is a Greek inspired ode to summer relaxation in liquid form. Like the mythical sorceress herself, this punch promises to soothe anything that ails you on a hot summer's day! It's a true punch, meaning it contains all of the necessary elements...spirit, sugar, water, citrus, and spice. Refreshing, complex, and super easy to scale up, it makes a magnificent party drink. It might just be the only summer elixir you need.

Circe's sucker punch (AKA Mediterranean punch) in a footed glass garnished with a slice of blood orange, a slice of lemon, and a large sprig of mint.

This recipe calls for a delicious dose of honey simple syrup, an easy (and endlessly versatile) ingredient that you can whip up in practically no time!

Ingredients for Circe's sucker punch (AKA Mediterranean punch).
    • fresh lemon juice
    • honey simple syrup
    • ouzo
    • fresh blood orange juice
    • fresh grapefruit juice
    • fennel bitters (optional)
    • fresh mint
    • plenty of ice

    See recipe card for quantities.

Instructions for Circe's Sucker Punch (AKA Mediterranean Punch)

Thin slices of blood orange and lemon layered on a cutting board in front of a small white plate holding fresh sprigs of mint.

Prepare some thin slices of citrus (i.e. blood orange, grapefruit, and/or lemon) for garnish and set aside.

Pale yellow liquid being tipped from a steel measuring jigger into a cocktail shaker next to two lemon halves with a small knife and citrus reamer.

Pour the fresh lemon juice into a cocktail shaker.

Dark amber liquid being tipped from a white cup into a cocktail shaker next to a bear shaped container of honey with a yellow lid.

Then add the honey simple syrup.

Clear liquid being tipped from a steel measuring jigger into a cocktail shaker next to a bottle of ouzo.

    Next add the ouzo.

Dark pink liquid being tipped from a steel measuring jigger into a cocktail shaker next to two halves of a blood orange with a small knife and citrus reamer.

    Add the blood orange juice.

Pale pink liquid being tipped from a steel measuring jigger into a cocktail shaker next to a bottle of grapefruit juice.

As well as the grapefruit juice.

Pale amber liquid being squeezed from a dropper into a cocktail shaker containing pink liquid next to a bottle of fennel bitters.

Then add the fennel bitters, if using.

Large sphere of ice being added to a cocktail shaker full of pink liquid.

    Next toss in some ice.

Pink liquid with a large round ice cube in a cocktail shaker being stirred with a silver spoon.

And then stir for at least 30 seconds.

Pale pink liquid being strained from a cocktail shaker into a footed glass filled with ice.

Strain the punch over fresh ice in a glass of your choice.

Garnish with fresh slices of citrus and mint sprigs, and serve immediately.

Hint: This recipe can easily be scaled up for a crowd, and also prepared in advance, if preferable. Just multiply the proportions to equal however many cups of punch you are after. Then mix all of the ingredients (except for the ice) in a large pitcher and place in the refrigerator. When you are ready to serve, simply pour over ice...and presto! You have a Mediterranean summer party mood in a matter of moments.

    Storage

Circe's Sucker Punch (AKA Mediterranean Punch) can be mixed up in advance and stored in the refrigerator for 1 to 2 days before serving.

    Top tip

When it comes to the citrus element, this punch recipe is extremely versatile. Can't find any blood oranges in your local produce aisle? No problem. While the color and flavor of blood oranges is undeniably unique, Valencia is another variety that also works really well here. (And frankly, almost any variety of fresh oranges will do.) Or maybe you would prefer a sweeter punch? You can certainly reduce the proportion of grapefruit juice and increase the amount of orange juice accordingly. In other words, feel free to choose your own punch adventure!
