Deliciously dramatic in its deep violet color and intense sweet-tart flavor, blueberry simple syrup is a versatile ingredient that is also exceedingly easy to make at home. All you need is a cup of blueberries, equal parts sugar and water, and a splash of lemon if you've got it. Use this syrup for cocktails, iced tea and lemonade, ice cream sodas, or drizzling over desserts...the possibilities are endless.

Blueberry simple syrup is particularly useful for all kinds of cocktails, including the very tempting Vim and Violet (AKA Blueberry Negroni).

    Ingredients for Blueberry Simple Syrup

    Ingredients for blueberry simple syrup.
    • blueberries, frozen or fresh (cultivated is fine, but preferably wild)
    • water
    • sugar
    • fresh lemon juice

    See recipe card for quantities.

    Instructions

Yellow liquid in a small steel measuring jigger next to a citrus reamer with a half lemon peel and a small metal strainer sitting in a small glass bowl.

First juice the lemon and strain out any seeds.

Sugar being poured from a steel measuring cup into water in a small steel saucepan on the stove.

Then place the water and sugar into a small saucepan.

Water and sugar being stirred with a flower engraved metal spoon in a small steel saucepan on the stove.

Over medium heat, stir until the sugar has dissolved. (This will only take a few minutes.)

Blueberries being dumped from a small glass bowl into a small steel saucepan of sugar water on the stove.

Add the blueberries. (If the berries are frozen, no need to thaw them first.)

Yellow liquid being poured from a steel measuring jigger into a small steel saucepan of blueberries and dark violet liquid on the stove.

    Add the lemon juice.

Blueberries in a deep violet liquid being stirred with a flower engraved metal spoon while simmering in a small steel saucepan on the stove.

Give the mixture a quick stir to combine, and then turn the heat down to medium low.

Simmer the mixture undisturbed for about 10 minutes.

Empty small steel saucepan with traces of violet colored syrup next to a glass measuring cup containing dark liquid with a strainer full of shriveled blueberries on top and spilled violet colored syrup underneath.

Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool for at least 30 minutes. Then strain it through a fine mesh sieve to separate the remnants of the blueberries from the syrup. (Preferably a bit more gracefully than I have done here.) The berry remnants can be either repurposed (yogurt and ice cream come to mind) or discarded.

Pour the syrup into a small jar or bottle and refrigerate.

Hint: Although the lemon juice is not an absolutely essential addition here, it brings a lovely brightness to the syrup.

    Storage

Blueberry simple syrup will keep in the refrigerator (in a sealed container) for up to two weeks.
