Deliciously dramatic in its deep violet color and intense sweet-tart flavor, blueberry simple syrup is a versatile ingredient that is also exceedingly easy to make at home. All you need is a cup of blueberries, equal parts sugar and water, and a splash of lemon if you've got it. Use this syrup for cocktails, iced tea and lemonade, ice cream sodas, or drizzling over desserts...the possibilities are endless.

Blueberry simple syrup is particularly useful for all kinds of cocktails, including the very tempting Vim and Violet (AKA Blueberry Negroni).
Ingredients for Blueberry Simple Syrup
- blueberries, frozen or fresh (cultivated is fine, but preferably wild)
- water
- sugar
- fresh lemon juice
See recipe card for quantities.
Instructions
First juice the lemon and strain out any seeds.
Then place the water and sugar into a small saucepan.
Over medium heat, stir until the sugar has dissolved. (This will only take a few minutes.)
Add the blueberries. (If the berries are frozen, no need to thaw them first.)
Add the lemon juice.
Give the mixture a quick stir to combine, and then turn the heat down to medium low.
Simmer the mixture undisturbed for about 10 minutes.
Remove the saucepan from the heat and allow the mixture to cool for at least 30 minutes. Then strain it through a fine mesh sieve to separate the remnants of the blueberries from the syrup. (Preferably a bit more gracefully than I have done here.) The berry remnants can be either repurposed (yogurt and ice cream come to mind) or discarded.
Pour the syrup into a small jar or bottle and refrigerate.
Hint: Although the lemon juice is not an absolutely essential addition here, it brings a lovely brightness to the syrup.
Storage
Blueberry simple syrup will keep in the refrigerator (in a sealed container) for up to two weeks.
