Slightly floral, slightly bitter, and slightly strong, this simple Alpine Negroni is a wonderfully balanced aperitif that makes a lovely prelude to any meal. Essentially, it's a variation on the White Negroni, which has become a modern classic for good reason. That usual combination of gin, blanc vermouth, and gentian liqueur is bracing, but still approachable. Made from the root of the dramatically beautiful, but incredibly bitter, alpine gentian flower...a little goes a long way. In contrast, this variation is made with génépy instead of gentian, which comes from artemesia and lends a more herbal flavor. The result is a drink with a bit less tang...think more chamomile than dandelion.

Components of an Alpine Negroni
There is obviously an enormous array of options when it comes to the gin and blanc vermouth components of this cocktail. Simply choose your favorites. But for those who prefer some recommendations, here are my favorites:
- For the Gin - Botanist, Plymouth, or Monkey 47
- For the Blanc Vermouth - Dolin Blanc, Cocchi Americano, or Lillet blanc
- For the Génépy - Dolin Génépy le Chamois is your best bet here. (If you can't get your hands on a bottle of génépy liqueur, you could try substituting yellow Chartreuse for a different spin on this drink.)
